Johannes Osten Tondrumsie, also known as Ole Bakken was born March 11, 1799, (Picture #1) North Nordreland, Norway.
There he grew to manhood and received his education. In 1820 he was married to Marit Hansdatter Bjerkengen, born December 31, 1799, in Toerpin on North Nordeland. To this union were born eight children:
I Berthe
II Osten J.
III Hans J.
IV Johan Martin
V Ole J.
VI Andreas J.
VII Annie Marie
VIII Johannes J.
In 1850, America and its tales of wealth, ideal climate and freedom began calling to Johannes. So in 1854, after three of his sons had already settled in America, Johannes sold most of his belongings and preparations for the long journey to America was begun.
They came by sail boat taking several weeks for the journey across the Atlantic Ocean. When they left Norway, they had to pack and take along food that would last them for the ocean voy age, then by river boat and ox drawn wagon to Allamakee County, Iowa.
In a hill side five miles east of Waukon, Iowa, he built a log and sod hut, Later buying some land on which was a log cabin built in 1853 (Picture #2A). This cabin was built of hand hewen logs, using wooden ppgs instead of nails. The shingles are of white oak and hand hewen. I visited this cabin in 1948 and it is still intact. The original well is also intact. It is hand dug with boards for walls. Johannes with his family and three of his sons and their families lived in this cabin for awhile.
The first years of their life in America were the same as for all pioneers. It required fortitude, patience, strong body and mind to keep body and soul together. But because of enduring strength, patience and a strong Christian faith, Johannes in time had one of the best cultivated farms and a nice home which still stands and is occupied by his great grandson Nennor Sorum. Of course, there have been lots of improvements and changes made

name. Finally decided on Sorum after "Sorum Stua", a cottage in Norway built by his son Osten when twenty-one years old. Therefore, he became "Stamfader" to the large and ever growing Sorum relationship.
Johannes died October 3, 1882, and Marit February 13, 1892. Both are buried on the old West Point Creek Church yard east of Waukon, Iowa.
