Robert was the son of Cloud James Mitchell and Susanna Killian. Identified siblings were: Martin Luther, Dewey, Solon Lee, David Bernard "Slim", James Millard "Bill", Lawrence Lossen "Bally", Anna Mae, and Cloud James "C.J." Jr.

On 21 Mar 1941, Robert E. Mitchell (B: 1912, Oklahoma), a resident of Sandoval County, New Mexico; enlisted as a Private in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was described as single, 5 feet 9 inches, 164 pounds, and a hunter-trapper. In 1941, he served with the Coast Artillery Corps in the Philippines when Imperial Japanese invaded. In 1942, he became a POW and survived the Bataan Death March. He died as a POW in Hoten POW Camp (Mukden), Manchuria where the Japanese were using him as slave labor.
