Services for Ruth Alexander, 79, of Jacksonville will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lon Morris College Chapel in Jacksonville. The Revs. Matt Idom, Virgil Matthews and Dr. Bruce Webb will officiate. Burial will be at Jacksonville City Cemetery, under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Miss Alexander died Tuesday at a Jacksonville hospital. She was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Jacksonville. She achieved her bachelor's degree from Texas Women's University and her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. She retired in 1988 after teaching speech and English at Lon Morris College for 29 years. She was also chairman of the LMC Drama Department for 16 of those years. Prior to service at Lon Morris, she taught high school for 11 years, then taught at Centenary College in Louisiana for 14 years. She also taught at Linden State College in Vermont for one year. She was a lifetime member of American Association of Retired Persons and also was a member of the Hyperion Club of Jacksonville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for many years, recently joining Central Baptist Church. She is survived by her cousins, Dorothy and R.H. Harley, Stocker Bardwell and John Bardwell, all of Houston, and Mark Bardwell of Tyler; and special friends, the A.G. Acker family of Jacksonville. Pallbearers will be Ed Snider, Paul Glass, George Griffin, Dirk Sheridan, John Ross and Sandy Terry.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
