Caroline was a Lady in Waiting for the Kaiserine; Carl was a physician on the Royal Court. Family stories state they eloped and married in America, but the 1850 & 1860 Census show that all the children born before 1850 were born in Germany.

Their first two children were killed in the Civil War.
