Reuben's stone is broken and partially buried. According to a letter to me from a Mr. Hancock in the 1980's, after I had written to him asking him about Reuben, Reuben's son John De Forest had arranged for the burial. But, Mr. Hancock couldn't find anything on how the graves were to be maintained, which was unusual. Mr. Hancock was wanting to know if I knew how to contact a descendant of the son John De Forest to see if any infomation had been passed down on the matter of their grave maintenance. Reuben had been a broommaker, who lived across the street from the cemetery. As was the custom in those days, they may have lived above Reuben's shop. Reuben's father-in-law John C. Goldberg, who was a music and foreign language teacher, was growing, among other things, broom straw on his Morris Co. land. That may be where the broom straw came from for Reuben's broommaking trade. John W. Hancock & his son Roswell M. Hancock witnessed Reuben's 28 Dec. 1872 will, so I learned of one relationship between the De Forest and Hancock families. John W. Hancock's aunt Nancy (Burroughs) Griswold was a sister of Charlotte (Goldberg) De Forest's mother Mary "Polly" (Burroughs) Goldberg. Sharon
