George Matthew Cmar, Sr., 95, of North Charleston, SC, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in a local hospital. He was the widower of Maude Belle Bowen Cmar. Born August 26, 1913 in Duquesne, PA, he was the son of Michael Cmar and Mary Pastorek Cmar both of Czechoslovakia. Mr. Cmar was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post 59. He was a retired ship fitter with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and owned and operated Boulevard Cash Grocery on Rivers Avenue 1946-1961. He was a member of St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church, Civilian Conservation Corps, Knights of Columbus Council 8900, Sr. Bowling league since 1973 and Navy Yard bowling team 1961-1973. Mr. Cmar loved to play his guitar and sing at the Sr. Citizens Home. He is survived by his two sons, George M. Cmar, Jr. of New York, NY and Thomas S. Williamson of Charleston, SC; three daughters: Alma W. Wheeler of Charleston, SC, Alma Helen Weathersbee of Charleston, SC and Shirley Poplin of North Charleston, SC; sister, Agnes Rzethleny of IN; brothers: Vincent Cmar of TX, Bernard Cmar of PA, Gabe Cmar of PA and Gusty Cmar of GA; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday, June 26, 2009, at the church between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church, 6650 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, SC 29418.
