Cashmere

Gertrude L. (Evans) Johnson, 90, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 8, 1997, at the Cashmere Convalescent Center in Cashmere. She was born Jan. 5, 1907, in Webster, Kan., to John C. Evans and Sarah Ann Schooley. She was the sixth child in the family of six girls and two boys.

The family moved to Idaho when Gertrude was 4 years old and she attended school at the Medicine Lodge School House in Clark County, Idaho. Her father operated the Post Office in Small, Idaho. When Gertrude was 12 years old she met Olie Daniel Johnson. They later married on March 8, 1927, and remained married for 68 years until his passing in 1995.

Olie and Gertrude moved to Montana in 1928, where they farmed and harvested Christmas trees. Gertrude was employed as a floor inspector at the Pea Factory in Ronan, Mont., for several years. She also worked at Consolidated Dairy in Ronan, wrapping butter. Following the closure of the dairy, she tended bar in Ronan, Charlo, Pablo, Dixon and Seely Lake. Her last employment was detailing mobile homes for a Missoula-based mobile home company. Olie and Gertrude sold their ranch in the late '50s and moved into the town of Ronan where they resided until they moved to Cashmere in 1991.

Gertrude joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Charlo, Mont., in 1954 and was a member of the Wenatchee First Ward since moving to Cashmere.

She is survived by her two daughters, Geraldine (Webb) Slechta of Cashmere, and Josephine (Goddard) Hope, of Quincy, and their spouses, Dean Slechta and Clifford Hope; a sister and brother-in-law, Beulah and Martin Johnson, of Ronan; (95 and 98 years old); 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; 7 stepgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
