Buford was a 2nd Lt and later a 1st Lt in the United States Army 9th Air Force, the 394th Bomb Group, 585 Bomb Squadron.. He was killed in France on 7 Aug 1944-- possibly in the 585 crash in the vicinity of Lisieux, The plane immediately burst into flames. Their bombing mission was to bomb the bridge at Nogent-sur-Seine.

The 394 had over 200 B-26 marauders assigned to it and they flew B-26's until after the war ended.
