Anna Sophie Baer, a 106-year-old woman who lived in the Modesto area for 72 years, died in a local convalescent hospital Tuesday.
Mrs. Baer, born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on July 26, 1886, married August John Baer in 1907. The Baers moved to California in 1920 with their two young daughters at the urging of family members.
"Her sisters and mother had moved here, and they told her it was a wonderful place with lovely weather and fruit on the trees," said Betty Giddens, one of Mrs. Baer's daughters.
The Baers first stop was Crows Landing, but they moved to the Modesto-Ceres area to stay soon after their arrival.
Other than the five years Mrs. Baer cooked for Walter White Elementary School in Ceres, she was quite happy as a homemaker, Giddens said. Mrs. Baer's specialty as a cook was baking pies, and when one of her friends or family members did something for her, they were sure to receive five or so pies as a thank you, Giddens said.
Mr. Baer died 27 years ago, and Mrs. Baer lived alone at her home until the age of 95, Giddens said. Mrs. Baer maintained a lifelong interest in gardening and embroidery, Giddens said, but she always enjoyed people more than anything else.
"She always liked everybody, I don't remember her ever being mad at anybody," Giddens said.
In addition to Giddens, Mrs. Baer is survived by another daughter, Margaret Clayton. Both are from Modesto.
She also leaves four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Services for Mrs. Baer have already been held.
