Ralph Leonard Thomas, son of Stacy and Lucinda Thomas was born in Linn co unty,Missouri, June 28,1881 and passed from this life at Norwood,Missouri , Frebuary 26,1967 at the age of 85 years, 7 months, 28 days. He was uni ted in marriage to Verdie Belle Stark June 6,1915. to this union four ch ildren were born. Mr Thomas had been a farmer in Douglas and Wright coun ties until his retirement.
He had lived in Norwood since 1959. He was converted and baptized in 193 3. Survivors include his wife, Verdie Belle, two sons; Lester and Ralp h Jr, both of Norwood. Two daughters, Joyce Hanks, Lynnwood,Washington , Barbara Frost, Kansas City,Missouri. One sister, Ethel Anderson,Kansa s City,Missouri and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 P M Wednesday in the Norwood Assembl y of God Church with Rev Chris Tyson officating. Appropriate hymns wer e sung by Rev and Mrs Waterman. Mrs Waterman played the piano.
Pallbearers Norman Anderson, Paul Suppes, Ben Smith, Bryan Snavely, Sherm an Gray, and Clifford Lorett. Burial was in the Oak Forest cemetery unde r the direction of Craig-Hurtt-Hudsell.
Ralph married Verdie Belle Stark June 6,1915, at the home of her parents , Essel and Nancy Stark. During the wedding a heavy rained occured, the c reeks rose and everyone had to spend the night. In 1910, when Verdie wa s 13, she developed Pneumonia and was not expected to live. Her parnet s had already laid out the clothes for her burial. It was the custom the n for people to come and sit with those sick, and one of those who came w as Ralph, accompanied by his date, a school teacher. Verdie, however, re covered and five years later, she and Ralph were married. The couple liv ed with Ralph's parents for a short time before moving to Alliance,Nebras ka, where both worked on a large farm. They returned to Douglas County f or the birth of their first child, James Lester, who was born Feb 17,1919.
They then returned to Nebraska until 1922. Again they returned to Dougla s County, to await the birth of their second child, Ralph Jr; who was bor n May 19,1922. This time they stayed in Douglas County and bought a far m near Hickory Flat school. They had horses, Cows, Hogs and Chickens. V erdie raised Chickens and sold eggs. Ralph milked Cows and sold milk. H e also did odd jobs as a Carpenter. Later he took a job on the WPA work p rogram, building roads and bridges, and came home only on weekends.
On May 17,1929 a daughter, Joyce Louise, was born. Another daughter, Bar bara Jean, was born September 6,1933. Then came the depression and year s of drought. They were forced to move to another farm, for a short tim e due to the shortage of water. In 1951, Electicity finally became avail able .
They continued to live on the farm until afew years before they died, whe n they moved to Norwood. Ralph died February 26,1967, and Verdie April 2 0,1977. Both are buried at Oak Forest Cemetery.
