Edward J. Nicholas of New Milford, died Monday, June 22, 2009 at New Milford Hospital. He was born in Plymouth, Pa., June 19, 1918. He was the son of James and Caroline (Kellaway) Nicholas. Ed grew up and went to school in Pennsylvania. He worked with his father and then owned the family business, Nicholas and Sons Auto Repair. He was married to the late Helen M. Ayre, December 24, 1940. In 1960, they moved their family to Connecticut. Ed worked as a machinist and technician for Perkin Elmer Corporation for 24 years. He retired in 1985. As an expert craftsman, he always enjoyed working with is hands. His skills went from building fine furniture to toys for grandchildren, from tuning carburetors to working on the Hubble Telescope. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Ed is survived by his wife, Marion Oldrin; his daughter, Susan Tiernan and her husband, Neil of Milford; his son, David Nicholas and his wife, Pat of New Milford; four grandchildren, Kerri Rowland and Brian of Milford, Amy Howland and Hans of Milford, Kevin Nicholas and Kathryn of Brookfield, and Caroline Marquez and Roberto of Windsor; four great-grandchildren, Sean and Emily Rowland, Leigha and Maxwell Howland. Ed is also survived by his sister, Leonette Fink of Harvey 's Lake, Pa. and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends in the Colonial Funeral Home at 87 Park Lane Road, New Milford, Thursday, June 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held in Colonial Funeral Home, Friday, June 26 at 11 a.m. Burial immediately following at Center Cemetery in New Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the New Milford Community Ambulance Corp. at 20 Youngs Field Road, P.O. Box 102, New Milford, CT 06776.
