Edward was born in Aadalen, Buskerud, Norway on S. Elsrud Farm. He came to the United States with his father and seven brothers and sisters in 1882, at the age of 14 years. They settled in Fairdale, Walsh County, North Dakota.
Edward married 1st Christina (Loven Vangen) Ohnstad in 1898. They had 2 children: Leonard Ohnstad and Alma Ohnstad. Christina died at the age of 32 as a result of burns suffered when a kerosene lamp tipped and ignited her clothing as she was playing the piano at their home in Lindsay, Minnesota.
He and his second wife Thora (Melhus) Ohnstad lived in McIntosh, Minnesota where Edward died at his home. Edward and Thora's children: Peder Ohnstad, Christina Ohnstad, and Thelma Ohnstad. Edward operated a general merchandise store in Milton, North Dakota and later at Hill River Township in Minnesota (Polk Co).
