Charles/Charley was born in 1907 near Kansas City MO to Bertha Ernestine Griffith and David Guy Finley. He excelled in athletics at Maryville/Northwest Missouri State College, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1932. He married Virginia Lucas in 1935, and she died in 1940. He taught and coached at the New Mexico School of Mines (now NM Institute of Mining and Technology) from 1940 to 1942. He remarried to Faye Rogers in 1942. He taught at Texas Western College in El Paso in 1944-45, and coached and taught at the University of Idaho 1945-1954. His career continued with coaching at Mississippi Southern College in Hattiesburg 1954-57. He taught and coached at Sierra Grande High School in Blanca CO 1959-60, at Robertson High School in Las Vegas NM 1960-63, then at Pecos High School in Pecos TX 1963-65, and finally at Socorro High School in Socorro NM 1965-1970.
