Enid, OK — The Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene Joseph McCoy will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Rev Kevin Ratterman will officiate. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Joe was born September 24, 1917 to David and Anna Reilly McCoy in Derby, Connecticut and died June 16, 2009 in Enid. He graduated from Derby High School and attended Milford Prep School. He entered the flying division of the US Army, April 29, 1942 and was stationed at Enid Army Airfield. He completed training as an aerial gunner at Harlingen Army Airfield, TX in 1945.

After his discharge in 1945, Joe graduated from Oklahoma A&M with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. On September 15, 1946 he married his USO girl, Mary Jo Vogt, at St Francis Xavier.

For 32 years when the school bell rang, "Mr Mc-Coy" was waiting to greet his students. He taught mechanical drawing and woodworking and coached football and track at Longfellow Junior High School from 1951 to 1970. After receiving his Master's Degree in Trade and Industrial Education from Oklahoma State University in 1970, Joe moved to Enid High School and taught industrial arts until his retirement in 1983. He was a firm but kind mentor. His students could not get away with too much nonsense, and his daughters also discovered this while attending EHS where Dad was teaching.

Joe was a positive influence on many young people, and they continued to keep in touch with him and thank him for his guidance. Most would recall the large sign he posted underneath the big clock in his room that read, "Time Will Pass. Will You?"

He cherished his family and opened their love for the wonderful beauty of our country, especially for his beloved New England. They made many trips there in summer and fall. Joe spent all seasons working in and enjoying his yard and garden, and the Yankee in him took special pleasure in growing Maine potatoes in Oklahoma.

His Christmas baby, Kath-leen Mavourneen McCoy, preceded him in death, as did one brother and four sisters.

Surviving him are his wife of 63 years, Mary Jo, his daughter Erin Mavourneen McCoy, whom he called the "sunshine of the house," his treasured grandson Win Mc-Coy Offill, of whom he was justly proud, his beloved niece Marilyn Rook and her husband, Tom Potter, and his never-forgotten, adored nieces and nephews in Connecticut.

Joe was his family's protector, and he occasionally had to "pull their chestnuts out of the fire." He loved them deeply, and they always loved him.

Memorials can be made to Our Daily Bread with Lad-usau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. Condolences can be emailed to the family at ladusauevans@suddenlink mail.com.
