MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Laverne Lawrence Bartels, 81, of Maquoketa, formerly of Baldwin, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 24. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1927, in Baldwin, son of William Bartels and Augusta (Weede) Bartels. He was a 1944 graduate of Baldwin High School, a class of five students.

He married Romane J. Caven on Jan. 26, 1952, in Sabula; she preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1998.

Laverne first worked at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa on the crank line. He then worked for J.I. Case in Bettendorf, as a machinist for 12 years. He also was a farmer.

Laverne was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.

He enjoyed woodworking, dancing and card playing. He especially enjoyed playing euchre, sheepshead and rummy. He was an honest and caring man who was a people person.

Surviving are his children, Cathy (Don) Steines, of Menominee, Ill., Larry (Linda) Bartels, of Baldwin, Cheryl (Tom) Hasken, of Davenport, and Neil (Janelle) Bartels, of Maquoketa; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mona Kleeman, of Maquoketa.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, LeRoy; and a sister, Leora.
