Nobel Prize-Winner in Medicine. A haematologist, he was honored in 1980 for his discovery of HLA cell antigens, a finding which enabled doctors to perform tissue typing and improve the results of organ transplants. Raised in Biarritz and later Paris, he was encouraged in the study of medicine by his rheumatologist father. After obtaining a degree in mathematics at the Lycee Michelet he was in medical school at the University of Paris at the outbreak of World War II. Drafted in 1939, he joined the Free French forces in North Africa in 1940 after giving his credentials to a Jewish colleague to aid him in escaping the Nazis. During his military service Dr. Dussat performed blood transfusions and developed the interest in transfusion reactions that was to lead to his later research. After participating in the 1944 liberation of France he finished the requirements for his M.D. then headed the National Blood Transfusion Center from 1946 until 1963. Addressing the question of why some people fight infection better than others and why some develop autoimmune diseases, Dr. Dausset and his team took tissue samples from 54 distinct ethnic groups, demonstrating that cell type inheritance laws are universal and that HLA antigens control immune response. Holding a number of academic posts over the years, he published "Histocompatibility" (1976) and "Immunology" (1980). Dr. Dausset scaled back his independent research after receiving the Nobel Prize, founded a genome research center now known as the Foundation Jean Dausset-CEPH of which her served as director until his 2003 retirement, and lived out his days in Spain .
