Jack was the son of Lee C. and Ollie P. Callister. In 1930, the family resided in Roswell, New Mexico (1930 Census). In 1940, Jack resided with his widowed mother in Deming, New Mexico (1940 Census).

Jack began his Army Air Force training in February, 1943. He was a tail gunner on a bomber. He served with the 445th Bombardment Squadron of the 321st Bomb Group. In 1943, the 445th participated in the North Africa Campaign and the Sicily and Italian campaigns. In June of 1944 the War Department wired his mother that Jack was missing in action over Italy since May 31. It was later confirmed that he was killed in action near Valmentone, Italy when his plane was brought down by enemy fire. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Jack was originally interred in Nettuno, Italy. He was re-interred in the Santa Fe National Cemetery on 20 Aug 1948 (Burial Card).
