A memorial service for Halbert Owen Woodward, 82, of Brownwood will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Brownwood with the Rev. Don Scott officiating.

Private graveside services are Thursday in Coleman Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home of Coleman.

He died on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000.

He was born on April 8, 1918, in Coleman, and grew up in Coleman, Big Spring and Lubbock. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He married Dawn Blair on Sept. 28, 1940, in Austin. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a graduate of the University of Texas.

He practiced law in Coleman until being appointed U.S. District Judge by President Lyndon B. Johnson for the Northern District of Texas, which includes Lubbock, San Angelo and Abilene divisions.

He moved to Brownwood in 1993. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. While living in Coleman, he taught the Men's Downtown Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Hal of Brooksmith and Ben of San Angelo; one brother, Warren of Dallas; and five grandchildren.
