MOUNT AIRY
Bessie Jefferson Simmons, 96, passed away on Sunday morning, Feb. 9, 2003, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born in Stokes County on Nov. 15, 1906, to James William Jefferson and Nancy Jane Slate Jefferson and was the wife to the late Tom Ishmael Simmons.
Mrs. Simmons was a housewife and a member of State Line Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth and Paul Holt of Stuart, Va., and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Simmons was predeceased by her brothers, Andrew Jefferson, Elder Lee Jefferson, Walter Jefferson, Edgar Jefferson, Jack Jefferson, John Jefferson and Charlie Jefferson, along with her sisters Hattie Shelor, Lillie Jefferson and Mary Creasey. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at State Line Primitive Baptist Church with Elder J.H. Keaton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends at the church immediately following the funeral services. Family requests that in addition to floral tributes memorials may be made to Francisco Volunteer Rescue Squad, 7100 NC Hwy 89 W, Westfield, NC 27053 or to the State Line Cemetery Fund, c/o Virginia Vaden, 4138 NC Hwy 89 W, Westfield, NC 27053. Special thanks to the staff of Colonial Care Nursing Center of Mount Airy for all the care they provided to Mrs. Bessie Simmons. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain is assisting the Simmons family.
