James McCarthy was a lumberjack and carpenter who, with his brother, Henry, worked their way from Petite Riviere, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia to Aitkin, Minnesota and then to Brainerd, Minnesota sometime between October 1892 and June 1895. He was the son of Lewis McCarty (1833-1908) and Dinah Fancy McCarty (1838-1926). James and Henry left their parents and twelve siblings behind in Nova Scotia.
Miss Annie Paul and Mr. James McCarthy were quietly married at the Congregational parsonage last Saturday evening, a number of intimate friends of the contracting parties being present. Reverend F. J. Brown performed the ceremony, and the bridal couple departed for Brainerd, where they will reside, and where a neatly furnished house awaited them.
