John is a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted in Co. C, 7th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry at East Saginaw, MI, on Aug. 31, 1862. He was mustered in on Nov. 13, 1862. He was discharged for disability on Sept. 30, 1863 at Annsville, VA.


John was one of the Vice-Presidents of the Seventh Michigan Cavalry association around 1900-1902. He appears in the book, "Personal and historical sketches and facial history of and by members of the Seventh regiment Michigan volunteer cavalry, 1862-1865," Comp. by William O. Lee. He gives an interesting three page account of his having to deliver dispatches through rebel teritory. Accompanying this story are two pictures of him, one dated 1863 and one dated 1899.
