Augusta Jane Chapin was the daughter of Almance (Almon) Morris and Jane (Pease) Chapin. She was the sister of Almon Morris, Henry Levi, Clarence Wells, Huldah Belle, Emery Tilden, Julius Willie, Mary Isabelle, Emma Louise, Elmer Bliss and Merrick Wallace Chapin.

Augusta Chapin became the second woman ordained by the Universalist Church, and the first woman ever to receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree (Lombard University). She was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 2010.
