A delightful and pleasant gathering of neighbors and friends took place at the fine residence of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Berry, 2 miles west of this city on Friday the 28th, the occasion being a surprise tendered by Mrs. Beery to her husband on the advent of his 58th birthday anniversary. Preparations for the surprise was complete. Quite a number from the city and the neighbors in the country were invited. On Friday morning by arrangement, Mr. Logan went to the house and invited Mr. Beery to accompany him to look at some stock. On returning home about noon time, Mr. Beery was surprised to see a number of carriages in the yard and on entering the house he was ushered into a company of about 60 who congratulated him.

A sumptous dinner was prepared and the afternoon delightfully spent. The day was unpropitous without, but joy, pleasure and social visits ruled within. Mrs. Beery made a number of presents to her husband. All present enjoyed the occasion and those invited and were not present regret that they were deprived of participating in the festive occasion, one of which "we" are numbered.

The death of Mr. Simon Beery, which has been feared for several weeks, occurred at his home in Mad River Twp. Monday morning. Mr. Beery was born in Fairfield County, October 28, 1823, and after several years residence in Breman, came to Urbana in 1867 and settled upon the farm where he died. Here he lived in the most elegant country residence of the county and he loved to entertain his friends at his social and friendly board. He was an enterprising citizen and the community will sustain a loss in his removal. He was married to Mary M., daughter of Perry Grove, March 5, 1846, and 6 children survive him with her.
