Funeral service for Lewis Edward Calkin were held from the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 2. Rev. A Marshall conducted the services. Burial took place in the Cashmere cemetery. A large number of beautiful floral displays from members of the church and friends were attractively arranged in the in the church parlors. A mixed quartet composed of Mrs. A. Marshall, Mrs. Albert Stoltenberg, Jack Palmer and Hal McManus sang two songs. Mrs. Cousens assisted at the piano. Bearers were: Fife Vaughan, Beairsto Davis, John Knox and A Thompson.
Lewis Edward Calkin was born at Manley, Nebraska December 15, 1875. His parents had come into Nebraska in a very early day and had taken part as pioneers in taming the great western prairie and making it habitable for a civilized and cultured people. He was brought up and fitted for life in the rather hard and rugged circumstances of the prairie farmer and when he reached manhood he entered for himself this hard but free and independent occupation. On February 23, 1898 he was married to Maggie Eugenia Torrence who had grown up in the same community and under the same circumstances as himself. These two young people were members of the Congregational church and in church and home they built up together an exceptionally beautiful family life.!The family moved to Washington in April 1911.They purchased a fruit farm in the beautiful valley of Cashmere and have made their home there during the twenty years which have since elapsed. When they came to their new home they united with the Presbyterian church.
Brother Calkin passed in the early morning of March 10, 1931 at his home. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, four sons, Russel of Walla Walla and Floyd, Virgil and Harold all living with their families in this community. One brother Howard Calkin of Colorado and three sisters, Mrs. Viola Joyce, Mrs. Myrtle Wiles and Mrs. Lena Gilbert all of Nebraska. And many more distant relatives and neighbors and friends who will miss him
