Barbourville native and resident Samuel Madison Cole, 87, died June 2, 2009, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Mr. Cole was born November 6, 1921, in Barbourville, Kentucky, to Charles George Cole Sr. and Mattie (Hayes) Cole.

He graduated from Barbourville High School in 1940 and was a member and trombone player with the Blue Rays dance band that
performed throughout the state.

On June 22, 1942 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in England as a radio operator and gunner on B-17 bombers for 35 missions over Germany and France. His air base was in Sudbury, England.

Upon his discharge in November 1945 with the rank of technical sergeant, he returned to Barbourville.

In the summer of 1948, he met the love of his life, Joyce Gander. They worked across Knox Street from each other, he at the old Universal Garage, she at the Greyhound bus station. The couple was married on December 31, 1948.

After briefly operating a service station near his home on Old Pineville Road, Mr. Cole was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked for 29 years and retired in 1983.

Mr. Cole continued to have a passion for things pertaining to World War II all his life. He maintained contacts with many of his Air Corps friends and returned to England as part of a reunion group with his brother, Earl, to visit his old base. Sam's and Earl's brother, Charles, also served in the U.S. Air Corps during the war.

Recently, Mr. Cole was honored for his military service during the annual Memorial Day Service at the Barbourville Cemetery held on Monday, May 25th.

Mr. Cole continued his love of music, especially jazz music, and was an avid collector and listener throughout his life.

He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 60 years and a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Barbourville.

He is survived by his wife Joyce; son and daughter-in-law, David and Betty Cole of Cannon, and children, Robyn Bradshaw and husband Joe of Knox County, Elizabeth (Liz) Linda and husband Eddie of Charleston, S.C., Suzanne Gibbs and husband Brandon of Gray, Ky.; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Cole and Terence McCormally of Herndon, Va., and children, John Barry McCormally and wife Shayla, Sam Cole McCormally and Anna Carolyn Cole McCormally; daughter and son-in-law, Leeanne and Jeff Rogers of Lexington, and children, Melissa and Benjamin Rogers; great-grandchildren Emily and Joeybeth Bradshaw and Gavin Gibbs; two sisters-in-law, Anna Gander and Trudi Gander, both of Cannon; two nephews, Earl Leslie Cole of Lexington and Tommy Cole of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four nieces, Penny Grady and husband Jerry of North Bend, Washington, Lynda Cole and husband John Mahoney of Moraga, Calif., Debby Anderson and husband John of Barbourville, and Cynthia Marstellar of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and friends from his long life in Barbourville.

Mr. Cole was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and Charles Cole, and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl Cole and wife Ruth and Charles Cole and wife Gean.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, June 4 at 8 P.M. with Rev. Shane Nickell and Rev. Joe Bradshaw officiating. Mr. Cole will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery Friday, June 5 at 10:30 A.M.

Casket bearers will be Sam Cole McCormally, Terence McCormally, John Barry McCormally, Benjamin Rogers, Jeff Rogers and Brandon Gibbs. Honorary bearers will be Earl Cole Jr., James Cole, John Anderson and Russell Pope.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday after 6 P.M. until the funeral hour. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home Friday and go together to the cemetery at 10 A.M.

Expressions of sympathy may go to the First Baptist Church of Barbourville Building Fund, 201 North Main Street, Barbourville, KY 40906 in loving memory of Mr. Cole.
