Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 30 Dec 1862 upon enlistment in New York City, NY. Commissioned an officer in Company S, New York 176th Infantry Regiment on Dec. 31 1862. Mustered out on: Dec. 19, 1863 at Camp Ford, Tyler, TX.

According to Family, John was taken prisoner at Brazier City, LA. and marched to Camp Ford, Tyler, TX. Died a prisoner of war in 1863 and was buried outside the stockade. Remains moved to Pineville National Cemetery in Shreveport, Caddo Co., LA.
