DAVID DARST

On April 16, 1798, Abraham Darst sold off the last of his land in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Already a resident of Washington County, Northwest Territory by the first of May, 1799, he purchased 100 acres of the Ohio Company Purchase, today being land in Cheshire Township, Gallia County, Ohio. Known then as Roush Landing, Abraham, his wife Mary and family took up residence on this land, which today lies south of State Route 554 from the Ohio River, through the village of Cheshire and just west of Gravel Hill Cemetery.

In 1804, Abraham sold to his son David for one dollar 40 acres of his original 100 acre purchase. On October 12, 1805, David Darst purchased 100 acres of river bottom land in Letart Township, Gallia County, Ohio (present day Meigs County), while on December 2, 1805 he sold to Philip Roush his 40 acres in Kyger, later Cheshire Township.

David Darst and wife Christina (Roush), daughter of Henry and Dorothea (Nease) Roush, settled down on this land one mile east of the Letart Islands.

From 1805 to 1813 David farmed this land, trying to provide for a wife and children Michael, Henry, Samuel, Mary, Susan, Dorothy, Daniel and Elizabeth.

With the out break of war with Great Britain in 1812, David saw volunteering for action a way to earn money to acquire more land but mostly to show his patriotism.
