Sarah Ann Veale (spelled Veal on her marker) was the second child of William Veale and Margaret Wells and was born while they were still living in Missouri (probably in Pike County) following their marriage there. Around 1833 the family moved across the Mississippi River to Pike County, Illinois, where William farmed and several more children were born. In 1854 Margaret Wells Veale died. (She is buried at the Hornback Cemetery near El Dara.) William, who was in ill health and needing a warmer, drier climate, took his younger children to California in 1857 by way of a Mississippi river boat, Cuba, the Isthmus of Panama, and up the Pacific Coast to San Francisco, where they transferred to a boat that took them to Benicia where a brother of Margaret's lived with his wife. The family then settled at Penngrove near Petaluma, where, with a break for a brief return to Illinois during the Civil War, William Veale farmed for the rest of his life and most of his children, Sarah included, made lives for themselves and their descendants. She and Jehu had married 26 April 1851 back in Illinois. Local history says they came to California earlier than her father, arriving in San Francisco December 16, 1856. While still in Illinois they had a daughter, Mary Emily Barnes (1852), who married David Newton Craig 1 January 1868 in Sonoma County, California. Other children included Henry Barnes (b. after 1852), Henrietta Ann Barnes (5 Feb. 1860, Sonoma County, CA), and Martha Barnes (after 1852, in Sonoma County).
