Owen Davis, a physician, was one of the first to settle in the area of Sulphur Springs, Texas, and is known as the "father of Sulphur Springs". He deeded the land that became the city square, and his obituary credits him with raising more orphan children than any man in the county. One of those orphans was my great grandmother Mary Elizabeth (Clark) Wineblood (findagrave no. 29620897). Mary and Owen's wife Amanda were of Creek Indian blood. Amanda's son Samuel B. Callahan (findagrave no. 7460562), by a previous marriage, was also raised by the Davis's and later became a prominent leader in the Creek Nation. Davis street in Sulphur Springs, named for him, runs north from the center of the city to the cemetery where he is interred.
