FORMER STATE SOLON PASSES
MERCED, Dec. 27.--J. J. Griffin, 45, died at his home here at 4 o'clock this afternoon. He was about as usual yesterday, but last night was taken with acute pneumonia. He was a native of Merced, a former member of Fresno Lodge of Elks, and a charter member of Merced Lodge. He was a grand trustee of the Native Sons several years ago, also a member of the California assembly, 1913 to 1915.
Griffin was a member of the legal firm of Griffin & Landram and very popular in Merced county. He was known as "Judge" Griffin, having a number of years ago served two terms as justice of the peace.

The 1900 census lists Martin, Delia, William, Patrick, John, Mamie, Thomas, Margaret and Claire living in Merced's Township 2. Martin's occupation is blurred (waitress??), William is a Saloon keeper, Patrick is a compositor and John is a grocery clerk.
The 1910 census lists Delia, Patrick, John, Margaret and Claire living on 2st Street (probably 246W21) Delia is widowed, John is a justice of the Peace, Patrick is a newspaper printer, Margaret is a teacher and Claire is in school.
