Defiance Crescent-News Obituary May 21, 1974
Joseph "Check" Scofield, 77 Jewell, died at 4:55 P.M. Tuesday in Defiance Hospital, where he had been admitted earlier in the day.
Born September 26, 1896 in Henry County, he was a son of Charles and Mellie (Mohr) Scofield and married Mary Foltz on April 8, 1931. He was a World War I veteran, serving with the Army in France, had been an employee of the Jewell Grain Company and was custodian at the North Richland-Adams School, retiring in 1961.
Surviving are the widow, Mary; two sons, James P, Providence, Ky., and John F., Swartz Creek, Mich.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Robert Scofield, Jewell; four sisters, Mrs. Blanche Schlaybaugh, 505 N. Clinton St.; Mrs. Eva Gackel, Jewell; Mrs. Rudolph (Florence) Egler and Mrs. Alvin (Kathryn) Brubaker, Route 4.
He was a member of the Independence United Methodist Church, the Jewell American Legion, Jewell Arbor of Gleaners and the Defiance Eagles Lodge.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Mast and Mock Funeral Home, with burial following in the Independence Cemetery. Visiting hours begin at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Defiance County Heart Association.
Funeral services for Joseph C. Scofield were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mast and Mock Funeral Home, the Rev. Henry B. Grimm officiating.
Burial was at Independence Cemetery where the Jewell American Legion conducted military rites.
Color bearers were Virgil Steffel, Ed Leopold; Color gurards, John Dunbar, Russel Flory; folding and presenting the flag, Duane VanValkenburg and Harry Shock; firing squad, John Hammon, Ed Bremer, Richard Helmke, Robert Leopold, James Coressel, Howard Shock.
Pallbearers were George Brubaker, Duane Egler, Lee Kaemming, Floyd Imbody, Gerald Clemens, Forest Haney.
