Veteran of World War II.

Willis Merrill Banks, 74, of Pleasant Grove passed away January 27, 1998 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo.

He was born Jan. 11, 1924 in Talmage, Idaho to W. Merrill and Inez Andersen Banks spending his early years on the family farm and attending elementary schools in the Bancroft area. During his youth he lived with his family in Provo, Snowflake and Thatcher, Arizona. He graduated from Thatcher High school in 1942.

Willis served with the 100th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals. Upon his return he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Clark, June 18, 1946, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

He graduated from BYU in 1948 and completed his Vocational Agriculture Teacher requirements at Utah State in 1949. He began his teaching career in Gooding, Idaho. In 1952 he accepted a position as Agriculture Teacher at the Pleasant Grove High School.

During his nine years in this program, his FFA Teams won numerous awards on the state and national levels. After earning his masters degree in chemistry, he taught math and chemistry at the high school.

In 1966 he was invited to come to BYU as Coordinator of Indian Studies in the new Indian Program.

He retired from the Chemistry Department as an Associate Professor in 1989, after 23 and a half years at BYU and 40 years of teaching. After study of the brain and its function in learning, he conducted scores of workshops and was generous with his time in helping students and other individuals with learning problems.

Willis was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many positions. He was a Bishop of the Timpanogos Third Ward for six years, a member of the High Council, and Executive Secretary to the Stake Presidency. He loved teaching, camping and motorhome travel, his family and family activities, all aspects of agriculture and was admired for his dedicated hard work in all the areas of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; and children, Linda (Ken) Ord, Laguna Niguel, California; Dr. Alan M. (Sharon) Banks, Highland; Dr. David C. (Shauna) Banks, Mesa, Arizona; and Jolene Jenkins, Goodyear, Arizona; a brother, Dr. Lavoir (Barbara) Banks, Ogden; and thirteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Ross and Reed.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, in the Timpanogos First Ward Chapel, Pleasant Grove. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by District IV of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
