David John Dale is the son of George Henry Dale/Deal and Susanna Stanford. He married Rebecca Adeline Houck in about 1864 and they had nine children. He also has eight siblings. He enlisted, at age 17, in the Confederate Army on June 14, 1864, taken prisoner 25 Dec 1864 at Fort Fisher, sent to POW camp at Point Lookout, MD, and released 26 Jun 1865. His father was released from this prison on the same day, and they, most likely, traveled together to Burke County, NC. He is listed on the monument to Confederate Soldiers in Court House Square in Morganton, but his father's name is not listed. Prior to about 1890, the name of this family was Deal in the census, land & court records which is an americanized spelling of the German name Diehl. Since 1890, the name has evolved to Dale. According to family legend, you were a Deal until you got a little property or money and then you became a Dale.(bio by Gene Jenkins)
