David drowned while on a wilderness hiking vacation in Katmai National Park, Alaska. His ashes were scattered in the woods behind River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the son of Charles Affelder and Mary Arlene Davis Affelder, and grew up in New Jersey, Bethesda, Maryland and Northwest Washington, DC. As an adult, he graduated from the University of Chicago and taught video at Roberto Clemente High School in Chicago. He was a talented videographer, risk-taker and consumate goof. He founded Hum Video, was a guiding founder of the Chicago group Students for Violent Nonaction and also went under the the alias of Frank Malbranche.
