One of five children of Abner N. Deuell and Susan (Baldwin) Deuell, who moved to Genesee County, Michigan, in 1839 to farm. At the age of 14, Nelson left the farm to go to schooled in Clarksville and after graduation had various jobs, including running a livery business. He moved to Pontiac in 1869 and formed Morris & Deuell, a livery business, with J. H. Morris. After 4 years, Mr. Morris retired and Mr. Deuell continued in the business. He married Lillian Stevens in 1870. They had two sons, Eugene and Raymond.
