Obituary Posted in "The Spectrum" June 19, 2009

DeVar "Tunk" Empey Gubler passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 21, 1932 in LaVerkin, Utah, to Wickley and Ruth Empey Gubler.

He married Joy Sanders in LaVerkin, August 1, 1952. He took his family to the St. George temple to be sealed together on February 20, 1965. DeVar spent his early years working with his father at the family sawmill on Mt. Trumbull. He always had a warm spot in his heart for the Arizona Strip. In 1950, he joined the Utah National Guard, Battery B 213th FA, and served in Korea during the war.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in the Bishopric, as Elder's Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, and on the High Council. He dearly loved his most recent church calling, serving as a ward missionary with his favorite companion, Joy.

He worked as a heavy equipment operator most of his life, but his passion was his garden and orchard. He gained great satisfaction by sharing the produce with family, friends, neighbors and an occasional passerby. He valued hard work and had very little tolerance for laziness. He loved people. He had a dynamic personality. He loved to visit and tell stories (the kind that got better each time he told them). He leaves a great legacy and an empty spot in the hearts of all that knew him. He honored and respected his parents and loved his extended family and looked forward to the reunions each summer. He will be greatly missed.

DeVar is survived by his sweetheart of 57 years, six children, Kendall (Rea) of Cedar City, Selinda (Randy) Stevens of Leeds, Laurie (Lance) Gifford of LaVerkin, Blair (Jilene) of LaVerkin, Chad of Phoenix, Stacey (Downna) of LaVerkin. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters; Darrel of Washington, Lynn, Charles, Doug, Sharron (Stevens) of LaVerkin, Annette (Johnson) of Fillmore, Nadine (Folkerson) of Las Vegas, and Carma (Maxwell) of Enoch. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all who helped in the care of our husband and father.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, 2009, at 11:00 am at the LaVerkin Stake Center, 481 N. Main Street, LaVerkin. Visitations will be on Thursday, June 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Friday, June 19 from 9:30 to 10:30, prior to services at the LaVerkin Stake Center.
Interment will be at the LaVerkin City Cemetery.
