Florence Bell Alyea: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Kitsap Sun (Bremerton, WA) - Thursday, January 9, 2003
Deceased Name: Florence Bell Alyea

Florence Bell Alyea was called home on December 12, 2002. She passed quietly at home in the loving arms of family members, surrounded by the love, thoughts, and prayers of her beloved family and friends, far and near. She was 95.
Florence was the first born of 6 children to Pete and Laura Rust of Seattle. She was born October 3rd 1907 in a boathouse on Lake Union in Seattle.

She met her late husband of 50 years, Les Alyea, while she was attending Roosevelt High School. He was enrolled at the University of Washington. She was 16. She later attended the University of Washington, majoring in Spanish Literature. They were married in the University district on June 1, 1927. She was 19.

Les worked for Texaco Oil Company, driving a fuel oil truck. They started their family in North Seattle where Barbara, Donna, and Jay were born. They moved to Apple Tree Point, then Kingston in Kitsap County in 1941; then two years later moved to Indianola, finally settling in Millers Bay in 1947 where they finished raising their children and watching their grandchildren grow.

Les started Poulsbo Electric in 1946. Florence was the bookkeeper and office manager. They both worked together until they sold the business to their son, Jay when they retired in 1965. They lived on Millers Bay until Les passed on. They had traveled for many years in their RV to Central America and throughout the United States. Florence always kept in touch with the family by writing innumerable post cards.

They were members of the Poulsbo Yacht club, Sons of Norway and the First Lutheran Church. They made many trips in their boat, the Peter Puget, to the North West waterways of WA and BC with their children, grand children and friends, building unforgettable memories. Les passed away October 2nd 1977 after a long battle with cancer. He has been sorely missed. They were a wonderful model of two people, loving and caring for each other and their family.
After Les passed, Florence moved to Hostmark in Poulsbo, where she lived until she was reacquainted with a family friend, Ray Campbell of Belfair. They were married in 1983 and lived in his waterfront home on the N. Shore of Hood Canal. He passed in 1994 and Florence remained at Clearbrook Inn in Silverdale where they said she was one of the most visited Grammas there. "She loved to show us all off to everyone at the Sunday Ice Cream Social."
She then moved in with her Granddaughter and family in November of 1999. She was lovingly attended to by her Granddaughter and neighboring Grandson and their families. She passed peacefully on December 12, 2002.

Florence is survived by her three children, Barbara Mathews of Bainbridge Island, WA, Donna (Salo) Yates of Yuma, AZ and Jay Alyea of Mesa, AZ. They remember her as a loving mother, always there when they needed her.
Preceding Florence in death were her sister Irene Walsh, Vivian Dent, Clayton Rust and Jean Childs. She is survived by her sister Doris Arnivick who lives in Poulsbo. She remembers Florence as being like her second mother: "always being able to turn to her for comfort and advice. She was so generous, she took care of everyone, her kids, our kids; we were always welcome in their home whenever we came to visit."

She is also survived by 11 Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren, and 5 Great-Great-Grandchildren who love, adore, and respect her and cherish all of the memories and stories throughout the many years she spent with them. She is remembered by her offspring as always ready with a hug and a kiss. The person always believing in, and encouraging us in school, occupations, family and marriage. "She had the right measure of spunk, vinegar, sweetness, nurture, and faith to be the best Gramma." She leaves us with a legacy to carry on. We love you Sister, Mother, Aunt, Grandma, Great-grandma, great-great-grandma and friend........we will meet you when we're done; you did a great job raising us. Welcome Home.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday January 18th at 1:00 at the Poulsbo Church of The Nazarene, 22097 Viking Way NW.
Please send memorial messages to the family to [email protected].
These will be given to the rest of the family.
