From New York she took a train to St. Joseph, Missouri. During the trip the baggage car caught fire, destroying much of her clothing and other possessions.
She was assigned to the company of Henry Miller to cross the Plains. One of the teamsters, sent out from Salt Lake City, to help the travelers, was George Henry Shaffer. They became acquainted and fell in love, and were married in Parley's Canyon just a few days before entering the Salt Lake Valley
Their first home was in Slaterville, Weber County, Utah, the Millville, Cache County, Utah, then Preston, Franklin, Idaho in 1877. Here they experienced all the hardships of pioneer life, cultivating the soil, digging wells, building a home, and dealing with the Indians.
In 1889, George took his fourteen year old son, Martin to get some sand, and while loading the wagon, the bank fell in on him and buried him. Martin tried to dig him out, but could not, and so ran for help. By that time, George had expired, leaving Esther Ann a widow at the age of forty-six.
Easther Ann was active in the LDS Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Relief Society Teacher, and Primary Counselor. She helped to raise four children of her daughter Elizabeth, when she died.
Esther Ann died in Preston, Franklin Idaho in 1918 at the age of seventy-five years.
