Charles Howard Voorhies was born in Portland, Oregon at 28th. and East Harrison on 22 September 1901, to Col. Gordon and Helen Strong [Burrell] Voorhies. He was their fourth and last child. He was a native Oregonian and well known Northwest artist and art teacher who died in his S.W. Portland home. His mother was the daughter of Martin Strong Burrell and his father was graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Virginia, in 1891.

Charles was christened at, The Church of Our Father (Unitarian) in downtown S.W. Portland, by Rev. Thomas Lamb Eliot, who was the founding pastor. Thomas Frazar being another founding member and his great-grandfather. Charles was a life long member of the church.

His father, Col. Gordon, in 1898, purchased a fruit orchard in Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon. The Gordon's spent the rest of their life's developing and expanding the orchard to about 700 acres. That is except for the two periods of time when he went back into the U.S. Army for the Spanish-American War and World War I, in France. Serving his country held great importance to him and he never forgot his time at West Point. Col. Voorhies was a true citizen soldier who believed in picking up arms in support of his country.

Charles was schooled at Harvard University and went on to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California at Berkeley. He then decided to study art and went to the Cate School in Carpenteria, California (CFSA) and studied under Maurice Sterne. For three months in 1930, he assisted, Diego Rivera on a mural for the San Francisco Stock Exchange.

Most of his paintings were landscapes and murals of which he retained a number of them at his home art studio.

Doris Danenhower (1912-2003) and Charles were married in San Diego, San Diego Co., California, in 1934. They are survived by their daughter, Margot Voorhies Thompson, and four sons, Peter Gordon, Daniel Bradford, Anthony and Sloan Voorhies, IV, died two weeks before her death. They had ten grandchildren, Craig (Voorhies) Moody, John Voorhies, Nathan Voorhies, Sharon (Voorhies) Larpenteur, Marian Voorhies Hyland, Lise Thompson Petrauskas, Margot Voorhies, Robert Voorhies, George Thompson, Jr. and Jack Voorhies.

From 1939-1957, Charles taught painting at the Portland Museum of Art School. Later, he taught classes and individual artists in his home studio. Several of his works are now owned by the Portland Museum of Art.

In his honor, the Pacific N.W. College of Art, has named their new library, the Voorhies Fine Art Library. His daughter, Margot Voorhies Thompson teaches art at their campus. She is carrying on as a professional artist and internationally known calligrapher.
