Gene B. McKelvey, 82, of Creston, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Wooster Community Hospital, following a period of declining health.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston with the Rev. Anthony Perry officiating. Burial will be at Creston Maple Mound Cemetery with military honors.
Friends may call Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial may be made to the Wayne County Humane Society, 1161 Mechanicsburg Road, P.O. Box 266, Wooster 44691.
He was born May 31, 1921, near Creston to Henry and Lydia (Biggs) McKelvey and married Shirley Romich on Nov. 25, 1945. She survives.
He was a 1939 graduate of Creston High School and graduated from Ohio State University in 1949 with a degree in dairy husbandry.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from Nov. 10, 1939, to Nov. 14, 1945. He participated in the defense of Pearl Harbor, the Consolidation of the Solomon Islands, the occupation of Japan and Iwo Jima where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He served overseas for 47 months.
He was engaged in farming with his brother-in-law owning and operating Romich-McKelvey Farms.
He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Burbank, was a member of Creston American Legion Post 497, and Pearl Harbor Survivors. He was Creston Citizen of the Year in 1998 and was active in Creston Minstrel Shows.
He was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed traveling. He traveled back to Pearl Harbor and later to Iwo Jima for the 50th anniversary.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter and son-in-law, Kris and Dan Swartz of West Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Barbara McKelvey of Wadsworth; grandchildren, Gregory and Ryan Swartz and Carrie Evans; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Abigail Evans; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ben and Marian Romich of Creston.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Keith, and a sister, Anita Neissen.
