Private for 3 months (May-Aug., 1861) in Co. I., 1st VT Inf. Re-enlisted the next year as a Sergeant in Co. B., 1st VT Heavy Artillery. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, Dec. 28, 1863. He was taken prisoner at Weldon Railroad on June 23rd the following year, and received fatal injuries from bloodhounds while attempting to escape prison in October.
