Mr. Hanford E. Moxley, 85, of Mount Airy died on Monday, December 3 at the Lorien, Mount Airy. He was the husband of Alamedia Grant Moxley.
Born on March 5, 1922 in Mount Airy, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Madeline Haines Moxley.
Hanford was a long-time NIH employee who managed National Heart Institute exhibits for nearly 20 years. He was widely known in health and medical fields and by professional associations of the U.S. for his work in presenting PHS-NIH-HEW exhibits at national and international meetings, Mr. Moxley received many commendations for his work. In a typical year while working at NIH and the then-National Heart Institute, Mr. Moxley produced, arranged, scheduled, and presented exhibits with information on cardiovascular subjects at 20 to 25 meetings and health fairs to audiences totaling over 3 million people.
Mr. Moxley first entered the Government in administrative work for the War Department in 1941. He also served in the Army in World War II.
In 1947, he began his USPHS career in the Office of the Surgeon General. Transferring to NIH in 1948, he joined the National Heart Institute in 1950 and served there until 1967.
He was then recruited by the National Institute of Mental Health to initiate an expansion of the Mental Health exhibit program.
Mr. Moxley continued to serve the NIHM as exhibits director, receiving a number of commendations and sustained high performance awards, until his retirement February 1, 1978 for disability.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 191, Elks, Glenwood Lions Club, NARFE # 409 and the Frederick Social & Support Stroke Club. He enjoyed coin collecting, Flea markets and tinkering in his shop.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Debbie Mielke and her companion, Stanley Klimek, of Gaithersburg, and Holly Hubble and her husband, Robert, of Monrovia; one granddaughter, Jenna Hubble; sisters-in-law, Marlene McCracken and Evaleen Leon, both of Mount Airy. He was preceded in death by two brothers Malcom L. and Charles Meryl Moxley.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd. Mount Airy, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6. .
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Airy Fire Co., the American Legion Post 191 or to the Calvary United Methodist Church, Mount Airy.
