"DIED.

BASSETT--On the 18th instant, at his residence on San Juan Avenue, Saguache, of pneumonia, Isaac C. Bassett, aged 65 years.

Although the deceased was sick about a week with an exceedingly treacherous disease, there was no apprehension of danger entertained by the public, or by his intimate friends until a few hours before his death. In fact a few minutes before he died he told Mrs. Bassett not to worry about him as he would be well in a few days.

Mr. Bassett came to Saguache in 1874, and his residence here has been continuous since that time. He was a good husband and father, and a good citizen. He was ever ready to extend a helping hand to those in need, and was always foremost in every public enterprise that was for the best interests of the community. He was a Justice of the Peace for two or three terms, was one of the board of school directors for several years, and occupied other positions of trust in this community. He was an enthusiastic member of both the Free Masons and Odd Fellow orders. He was one of the original organizers of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Saguache, and was District Deputy Grand Master of the Lodge from its organization to the time of his death. He was a member of the Odd Fellows order over thirty years, and had passed through the chairs three different times, and helped to organize several Lodges before he came to Saguache. He was also one of the original organizers of the Masonic Lodge here, and was [its] first W. Master.

The funeral was on Tuesday, and was the largest funeral ever had in Saguache. Services were had at the house by Rev. Dr. Cornelius, and then the remains were taken in charge by the Masons and Odd Fellows, and conducted to the grave, where both bodies performed the burial ceremonies of their orders in an imposing manner. Every member of the Masonic Lodge that was in the county was present, as [were] several Masons not members of this Lodge. About fifty vehicles loaded with people followed the remains to the grave, which with the Masons and Odd Fellows and others on foot, swelled the gathering at the grave to between three and four hundred people.

In his death this community has sustained the loss of one of its best citizens. His family have the sympathy of all our people in their deep affliction."

Isaac's wife was Lucinda and they had several children. According to the 1860 Census of St. Joseph County, Michigan, they had children: Charles, Ella, Devere, Frank, Lucy "Lula," and Frederick. Lucy R. Bassett, daughter of Isaac and Lucinda, married Louis H. Decker at Saguache June 5, 1878. Witnesses for the marriage were Lucy's brother and sister-in-law, Frederick R. Bassett and his wife C.W. Bassett.

According to the obituary he was 65 years of age, but the stone inscription says 64 years of age. It is very likely that he would have turned 65 later in the year.

Isaac was a druggist at the 1860 Census and a dry goods clerk at the 1870 Census. At both of these censuses, the family was living at Three Rivers, St. Joseph County, Michigan.

Isaac's middle name comes from the death and burial information of his son Frederick R. Bassett. See his link. It's possible, though, that it was Chancey.
