Field Marshall Sir Patrick Grant was born in Auchterblair, Invernessshire, Scotland the son of Major John Grant of 97th Regiment of Foot.
He entered into the Bengal Native Infantry in 1820. He gained the rank of Captain in 1832. Sir Patrick was in the Adjutant-General's department of the Bengal Presidency Army from 1838 until 1854, and became Adjutant-General in 1846. He served under Sir Hugh Gough (later became his father-in-law) at the battle of Maharajpur in 1843. Sir Patrick Grant was severely wounded twice during battle and in 1846 he received the CB and the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
After the battles of Chillianwala and Gujarat, he was appointed Aide-De-Camp to the Queen. He served in 1851 under Sir Charles Napier. Sir Patrick was promoted to Major General in 1854, and later became Commander In Chief of the Madras army from 1856 to 1861. He was made KCB in 1857, and was summoned to Calcutta to take Supreme Command of the army in India.
On leaving India in 1861 he was decorated with the GCB. He was promoted Lieutenant General in 1862, was governor of Malta from 1867 to 1872, promoted General in 1870, Field Marshal in 1883 and Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards.
Sir Patrick Grant married Jane Anne Tyler, and they had two sons. His first wife died he married Frances Maria Gough, daughter of Sir Hugh and Francis Maria (nee Stephens) Gough. She was 20 years his junior and the couple had five sons.
He was governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, from 1874 until his death there in 1895. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
