NATIVE OF EUROPE DIES AT AGE OF 76; LIVED MOST OF LIFE ON SHORES OF WIND LAKE
Ludvig Johnson of Wind Lake passed away at his home Friday evening, Jan. 6, 1939, at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 14 days, after an illness of several months.
He was born in Eidsvold, Norway on May 19, 1862, the son of Katherine Yonson Broton and Abraham Johnson. When he was six years old, the family emigrated to America and came directly to the Old Muskego settlement. They later bought a farm on the south shore of Wind Lake. A son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs.. S. J. Engh, live on the old homestead. Later, Mr. Johnson bought an adjoining farm and lived there until 16 years ago, when they moved to their home at Wind Lake. Ludwig was baptized in Norway, Europe, and confirmed at the Norway Lutheran Church, Wind Lake, where he was a faithful member for almost 70 years.

He served as “Klokker”, or cantor, in the Norwegian language, for almost 22 years, and
served as trustee and deacon for many years. Mr. Johnson has always been known for his fine, sterling character and honesty, and will long be remembered as an upright Christian in all his dealings with his fellow man. He was first married to Anna Olivia Olson in 1854. To this union were born two daughters, Emma (Mrs. Elmer Halverson) and Anna (Mrs. S. J. Engh). On March 31, 1890, his young wife died.

On June 21, 1895, he was married to Gunda Caroline Olson. Two daughters, Amanda (Mrs. Jay Payne) and Esther (Mrs. Johnalbert Malchine) were born to this union. Those remaining to mourn Mr. Johnson’s death are his wife, four daughters, four sons-in-law, eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mathilde Thompson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. T. C. Anderson, of Canada; three brothers, John, Milwaukee, Chris of Marcus Ia. and Charles of Chicago; a cousin, Dr. F. Melius Christianson, director of the St. Olaf Choir, Northfield, Minn.; several nephews and nieces and a host of friends. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon, January 9, at 1:30 from the late home, and at 2 o’clock at the Norway Lutheran Church. Rev H.C.M. Jahren officiated. Soloists were Mrs. Edmund Rolfson and Mrs. Albert Malchine. Six old friends acted as honorary pallbearers: Halvor Olson, Ole A Johnson, Martin Krogstad,
Julius Christianson, Hans Bendickson and Ole Knudson. Five grandsons, Russell and Raymond Engh, Roger Halverson, James Payne and Gar Turnock, and a friend of the family, Louis Noll, were the active pallbearers. Interment was at the Norway cemetery.
Those from a distance who came to the funeral were his brothers, Chris and Charles; Frank Johnson, a nephew; Mrs. James House, a niece; relatives and friends from Wadsworth, Ill, Milwaukee, Union Grove and Burlington.
