ONTARIO, Wis. – Jay D. Downing, 75, of Ontario, died Saturday, Dec. 18, at a La Crosse hospital following a long illness.

He married Ella Ferries Oct. 12, 1916, in Winona, Minn., and they farmed in the Whitestown area from 1919 to 1971, when they moved to Ontario.

He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Iola Johnson of Vandenburg AFB, Calif., and Mrs. Matilda Walkowiak of Milwaukee; three sons, Ellsworth and Duane of Ontario and Darrell of Janesville; one sister, Mrs. Minnie DeWitt of Sparta; three brothers, Burr of Madison, Henry of Hillsboro and George of Ontario; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Baptist Church in Ontario, Rev. Kenneth Craig officiating, and burial in the Old Ontario Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday and until 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Jay Downing residence in Ontario. The Smith-Nelson Funeral Home at Kendall is in charge.
