A veteran of WW II, he served in the US Army from January 1942 to October 1945. He served mainly in the South Pacific. His medals include the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
He married June Winters, December 17, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple and they raised ten children. He was a farmer and rancher he also worked 17 years for the US Forest Service. In 1997, the Canyonlands Soil Conservation District named Obie and June as Outstanding Farmers of the Year. In 2007, he was recognized as an Honorary Cowboy by Garfield County and Panguitch City at the annual Cowboys Ain't Dead Yet Festival.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Obie is survived by his children, Mavis Strebel, Layton; Macailif (Susan) Shakespear, Leander, TX; L Dee (Tina) Shakespear, Page, AZ; Vance (Kathy) Shakespear, Cedar City; Esther (Bruce) Lloyd, Layton; Kelly (Pat) Shakespear, Tropic; Elna (Mark) Jeffery, Terra; Nelda (Darwin) Nef, Enoch; Joan (Warren) Platt, Newcastle; Gwen (Dan) Perry, Salem; 70 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Dixie Shakespear and brother-in-law Leon Parkinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 siblings: Ellis, Preston, Mildred, Alton, Eldredge R. Shakespear (1909-1995) , Vernal, Golda, Ina, Mont, Eulla, and Aletta.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 12 Noon in the Tropic LDS Church. Friends may call at the chapel on Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Tropic Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Bryce Valley American Legion Post #18.
