CONCORD - William McCoy Shinn, 95, of 1094 Union St. S., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Tucker Hospice House. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Center Grove United Methodist Church, Stanfield, with the Rev. Alan Thompson and the Rev. Charlie Davis officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. Military graveside rites will be performed by Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Shinn was born Feb. 25, 1913, in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Thomas Franklin Shinn and the late Hattie Mae (Hahn) Shinn. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Rhineland and European Asia Pacific. His duties were tank destroyer, Division 807 and 610, machine bun marksman, inside tank driver, inside assistant tank driver, inside tank loaded 3" mortar in chamber, inside tank fired mortars and tank gunner. Bill loved to go fishing at Topsail Beach. His nickname while fishing was "Salt-Shaker." He was an honorary life-member of the American Legion Post 51. He was a member of Center Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (Mann) Shinn; and his wife, Geneva (Linker) Shinn; brothers, Glenn, Ralph and Melvin Shinn; and sisters, Lucille Hough and Marie Black. Survivors include his son, Steve Shinn and wife, Kathy, of Concord; daughter, Billie (Shinn) Pair of Concord; stepdaughters, Peggy Hinson, Betty Riley and Carrol Rebbert, all of Concord; grandchildren, Wendy (Pair) Watson, Gary Pair and wife, Tena, Tami McCrary and husband, Alex; and great-grandchildren, Caleb and Ethan McCrary. The family meeting place is at the home of his son, Steve Shinn, 570 Brownlee Drive, Concord. Memorials are to be made to Center Grove United Methodist Church, 8055 N.C. 200, Stanfield, NC 28163.
