A funeral for Arthur Robert Ashe Sr., owner of Ashe Custodial Services here and father of former tennis champion Arthur R. Ashe Jr., will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at New Line Baptist Church in Louisa. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ashe, 68, died Sunday in a Richmond hospital after suffering with a heart ailment for many years.

He founded Ashe Custodial Services, a firm that cleaned mostly banks in Goochland, about 1953.

A South Hill native, he came to Richmond when he was 14. He worked as a chauffeur for Morton G. Thalhimer about seven years.

Mr. Ashe was an employee of Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad Co. until 1946.

He joined the Richmond Bureau of Police and became caretaker-police officer for the former Brook Field Recreation Center, which was on Brook Road where the main post office stands.

He moved to Gum Spring in 1965, retired from the police bureau about 1966 and devoted himself to his business.

His son, who retired from tennis in April 1980 after successful heart surgery in 1979, was ranked first in world tennis seedings in 1968 and 1975.

Ashe's victories included the Wimbledon singles championship in 1975, the U.S. Open singles title in 1968, the Australian Open singles title in 1970 and the U.S. Clay Courts singles championship in 1967. He was a former captain of the U.S. Davis Cup and World Cup teams.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lorene Kimbrough Ashe; two other sons, Robert N. Ashe of Gum Spring and Johnnie E. Ashe of Jacksonville, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Harris of Glen Allen; a sister, Mrs. Lola Baker of Gulfport, Miss.; two brothers, Horace A. Ashe of Richmond and Jesse J. Ashe of South Hill; three half-brothers, George W. Taylor Jr. of East Orange, N.J., Melvin J. Taylor of Fayetteville, N.C., and Edward S. Taylor of Washington; three stepsisters, Mrs. Mary Ethel Benton o f East Orange, N.J., Mrs. Mattie Griffin of Washington and Mrs. Mildred McMillian of Lancaster, Calif.; and six grandchildren.(Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - March 21, 1989)
