Frederick Alonzo Armstrong was the son of Alonzo G. Armstrong and his wife Ann Eliza Fenton, both born in New York State. Alonzo and Ann lived in Manhattan, and their children included Ann, Mary, Georgiana, Jane, Edward, Fred A., George, and John. Alonzo was a produce dealer. (Note: Although his gravestone says that Fred was born in 1864, he was already two years old in the 1860 U.S. federal census.)

Fred Armstrong married Emma Louise (Wilson) Pettigrew on 9 Jan 1893 in Manhattan. Fred was Emma's second husband, but they never had any children.

Like Emma, Fred was a milliner, and he continued on in the millinery business until Emma died. After that, he worked as a gardener, also as a caretaker of a summer resort up in Chester in Warren County, possibly the McAveigh House, which owned by his wife's brother-in-law, James McAveigh.
